Goodbye #1000words, hello Craft Talk

Hi friends.

Don’t worry - #1000wordsofsummer isn’t disappearing forever. It’s just that this list is turning into a weekly newsletter about writing called Craft Talk.

Every Friday I will talk about writing sentences and essays and chapters and entire books and editing all of these kinds of things and how to motivate yourself and how to generate ideas and how to get inspired and how to navigate the publishing industry & more. I will ask other authors and creative people about these topics too.

I am in the middle of editing my memoir - my eighth book! - which will be published sometime in 2022 and beginning a new novel, so I am in the thick of contemplation and process. I am not only ideally situated to talk about my craft, but also the business of writing. I would like to share what I know and what I learn (because I am always learning new things about writing!) with you.

This weekly newsletter will be free, because I believe access to information that encourages people to write should be free. Writing is my favorite thing to do in the world and it has saved my life countless times and I wish all of this same magic for you. If you would like to do a paid subscription to this newsletter to support my efforts, that would be appreciated, but it is not required. I want you to get what you need to make your art.

I will also be writing subscriber-only emails 2-4 times a month. Topics covered will include: what I did this weekend, how my dog is doing, how my editing is going, books I am reading, a true thing that happened to me in my twenties, hurricane season, good food I have eaten in New Orleans, conversations I have with my neighbors, friends, and other writers. You will also have access to subscriber-only discussion threads and archives.

This part will not be free. It will be $5 a month or $50 a year. Fifty percent of the proceeds will go to various cultural, educational, and social justice organizations in New Orleans. I will be transparent about which organizations. The other fifty percent will go to keeping the lights on over here. (And dog treats.)

#1000wordsofsummer will still happen every summer and run on this list. You can unsubscribe and come back to it then if you like. But I feel like you should stick around. It’s going to be fun.
