This is a reminder that #1000wordsofsummer will be beginning one week from today, May 29.
We will be writing 1000 words a day, every day, for two weeks. You will get a daily email with encouraging words from me and some inspiring guest authors, plus access to a robust online community on twitter. I am beyond excited to do this with all of you. I swear I can feel all your energy and enthusiasm streaming through the ether.
If you’re joining us for the first time or want a warm-up, feel free to peruse the archives from 2019 and 2018. I like this first letter from 2018 for some helpful prep. And these past letters which contain some words of wisdom from Celeste Ng, Kristen Arnett, and Ada Limon.
I have a small assignment for you during the next week. I want you to write a letter to yourself – maybe take an hour to do it – and in that letter, deposit all your garbage feelings about your work. I’m talking about your fears and anxieties surrounding your writing, and every little trick you use to talk yourself out of being the best and most productive writer you can be. Write it down, put it in a drawer, and then don’t think about the contents of this letter, don’t go near it, don’t touch it, for the two weeks we’re working together. It’s time to clear your head and ready yourself for this moment.
A final thought: Don’t let anything get in your way, if you can help it, but especially not yourself. This is your time to sing like a goddamn angel.
See you in one week,
