I just found a residency I want to apply to so I’ll be spending the rest of this year revising my zero draft (or part of it, at least) into something I feel confident enough in to submit. Count me in for whatever!

I joined this Substack because I wanted to connect and share words with other writers. I was just about to unsubscribe due to the lack of that connection and the ask for more money to get that feedback.
I have enjoyed reading about the success of Jaime. You have a great life, thank you for sharing.
Please do unsubscribe if you're not getting what you need from this newsletter! I do feel like it's pretty clear in the FAQ what happens here and there's tons of free archives available so you can see what's going on here. You can still have access to all of that (and continue to get plenty of free stuff) whether you're paid or not. I'm actually never going to give you feedback on your work or anything like that though. That's not what this newsletter is. Good luck!
I'm reading Writing Creativity & Soul by Sue Monk Kidd. My husband spotted it at a bookstore and showed it to me, "I think you'll like this one." I have been slow reading it ever since, not wanting to rush through her stories. Even in bite-sized pages, it gave me great inspiration to get back to my own words.
100%. It’s rare for me to do the slow intentional read so I can draw out the goodness. I hope it’s that for you, too! Taking so many notes and I have a long list of books I want to re-read. And her writing stories are so good!
Reading a good essay always gets my pen moving, even if I read a random paragraph. On my pile now, essay collections by Ann Patchett, Zadie Smith, Susan Orlean, James Baldwin. But my go-to ritual for sitting down to write is to pen a letter! P.S. Jami, I am loving your reflections & photos from Key West...so happy for you to be there resting and soaking up inspiration.
So funny that you asked this because I opened this newsletter with the specific intention of using your words to inspire me to write! I often look for a new Craft Talk to get me into the right headspace. <3
I will be receiving edits on my first novel as well. I would love to hear your thoughts in real-time on editing. I find it to be the most challenging part of writing so far. I love reading Karl Ove Knausgaard's fiction before writing. He is masterful with tension, character, pacing, insightful rumination, and more. Currently leaning on The Morning Star. Allie Smith is another one...Thank you dearly for your newsletters. They are consistently wonderful.
Hi Jami, I'm about to start editing my second novel any day now and will definitely still be doing it in December! The Slack group helped me a lot during 1000 Words of Summer, which helped me finish my first draft. So personally I'd love it!
I’m getting my novel in shape, too! I have been reading Melissa Febos Body Work. She is splendid for getting a writing rhythm going in my head! So poetic.

I’ll be editing, too! Am currently feeling like I’m in revision hell, so would love to connect with people working through the same fun stuff I am!
Yes! I will be editing! Almost done with the very rough first draft and have a running list of things to attend to for Edits Round 1
Yes! I will be getting edits back by mid-December so I'll be editing!

I had been considering getting this book - sounds like you'd recommend! :)

Leslie! So sweet!
I will be editing as well! I always dread editing and then fall into it - or so I tell myself.
Just finished Our Evenings by Alan Hollinghurst. The beauty of those words . . .

I'm trying to write my first novel, and I keep going back to one of my favorite books, The Animators by Kayla Rae Whitaker. It's like my bible.
I’m currently editing my first novel and will still be editing in December. I’d love to do check-ins/sub-Substack! Great motivation!
I am receiving edits in December and working on them for a few months as well! Interested in the sub-Substack :)
