Recently a painter friend told me he was thinking of writing a novel. “I know I should stay in my lane though,” he said, and I replied, “What even is a lane?”
Lanes are designed and constructed by someone on behalf of people they may never meet. To create order. But that’s not necessarily what our imagination or creative impulses need.
The next day I saw that Deborah Levy interview from the Hay Festival that’s going around where she talks about how she doesn’t see the distinction between genres, that it’s a marketing construct.
Forget the marketplace anyway, I thought, when I watched it. The marketplace is a fickle bitch.
