Yes! Go, Jami! Go, little book! I hope it makes all the lists this week, too! Great post, I loved this line: "In fact most projects are messy and middling until they… aren’t. Until you put in the work while you strive for something new and special and vibrant and different and unique." We're all just throwing paint on the canvas (words) and working with it until it's a thing. Until it's The Thing. Needed this reminder this week.
And a little rumination about the mess of a book in process. From years of teaching writers and being in my own literary messes (books in process), I now believe the difference between experienced and newbie writers is the ability to hang in there during the mess that a book must go through en route to being more than mediocre. It's HARD to do this, to believe in it even when it's all dissembled and ugly. It's HARD not to think you are also that way. But it all passes if you keep slogging through. And somewhere there's a little light and something good coming in, that encourages again. Thanks for bringing up this topic this week, when you are so busy with something that's way beyond mediocre!
