Agree about making up the "rules" of writing to fit our own lives. I don't think guilt about not writing the right way, ever produced great writing. That said, here we go. 1000 words, coming up. Write on!

I love that story about Tom Waits too. And, my muses are the same as Jaya’s -- they crave the thrill of the chase. As in, I have to chase them whenever they choose to show up. That said, having firm hours when I will make myself available to write also works for me. Sometimes they’re kind enough to show up during those Office Hours. My muses, basically, are like me -- mischievous and a bit of a PITA, but ultimately striving to be considerate and kind. Learning to deal with my own quirks, then, has indeed helped me to deal with theirs. Thank you for this letter, normalizing and naming all of this. Wishing everyone a writing day where they catch their quirks and muses in an affable mood!
