Greetings from New Orleans, where it is stupidly hot every day, and occasionally reasonable at night. Sometimes friends visit me in the backyard after sunset. I have been eating a lot of ice cream lately, and drinking Campari and sodas, too. I trim the unruly jasmine in the mornings. I walk six miles a day in the heat. Walking off everything, I guess. My electricity bill is that of a much wealthier person, but I can’t sleep otherwise. A few days ago, I gave myself a dye job because I was bored and it turned out badly, and I shrugged. Everything fades in the summer, I thought.
Hey Jami, AC is necessary and worth the moolah. You asked about what do I need for my process: a sturdy notebook, the same spiral bound beauty from Staples every time and a Uniball Signo .7. I need to play around with scene ideas for a few days of dream storming before I know I'm ready to sit at my screen. I found that my best work develops through sketching ideas. That's how I develop characters too. Magic often happens when I'm playing around. I also write questions that I need help figuring out. The answers usually arrive the next session. I guess we all have our our individual way to the page. Thanks for asking.
Now I'm consumed by the thought of Campari and soda! Here in Chicago we're experiencing some beautiful unsweltering days so maybe I have quite earned the Campari. I find what motivates me is a challenge, being held accountable at least in the nascent stage of my writing life. I love the #1000 words challenges/ opportunities. I also take a few seminars so that I can get energized and inspired by other writers. Yesterday was the start of a new memoir writing class and as everyone introduced themselves, I realized that I wanted to learn more about them and to read All their memoirs. Be well Jamie and all!
