Those are precious days indeed - caring for aging pets, friends, parents. Realizing that our time together has somehow become short makes what remains all the more remarkable. What a lovely way to spend the day with your dear friend. Thank you for sharing and the recommendation on Laurie Colwin.

Hope your little dog feels better soon. At Writers in Paradise and you got the nicest shout-out from the lovely Laura Lippman for help with pitching essays.

All best wishes for you little dog. Here at my house, we are nursing three geriatric cats who require near-continuous trips to the vet for sub-cutaneous fluids.

I'm a HUGE Laurie Colwin fan! Thanks for shining a light back on her work here. Intrigued by Vintage Contemporaries now. I feel for your soft, bruised heart with an ailing dog as we also watch our 14 year old Border Collie, who used to be an agility champion, chase his own hips across the ceramic tile in and out of socket. 😢 Loved this post.

Very curious why you refer to your dog as just “dog”? Are they in witness protection??? 🤪🤪😜 Hope they are on the mend.

Laurie Colwin is a genius. I read Happy All the Time in the early 1990s and went on to read all of her novels, most of them more than once. Shine on Bright and Dangerous Object and Goodbye without Leaving are my favorites. I hope you'll like them too.

I hope your pup rests and rebounds quickly! These little furry things mean so much!

Your words, both uplifting and raw, are always relatable. Senior gentlemen (quadruped or biped) have taught me a great deal over the years. Cheers.

Jami, one of the best things I did for my senior girl was to get a stroller, swallow my pride, and take her for walks in her carriage. She LOVED it. Perhaps this is an idea for Sid, so he can still be social while conserving energy? All my love to you both!

I am fairly certain this gentleman will object and/or jump out of it but I am glad it was helpful for her!!

First, best wishes to Sid and I hope he will be on the mend and able to get back to his usual routines soon. I am living with 4 senior cats (16, 16, 16 and 14!)--2 mine and 2 my partner's, who died a year ago this week. I need them all to keep going for awhile yet because I could not bear to lose any of them anytime soon.

Second, what a blessing to discover Laurie Colwin now! I was a fan of hers from the beginning and utterly devastated when she died so young and suddenly. But the books hold up, mostly, even in this different age. My other favorite, besides Happy All the Time, is Another Marvelous Thing. The stories in the Lone Pilgrim are also wonderful. I envy you your continued first time Colwin reading!

I so deeply relate to your post. At one point I had three dogs and two died of old age (my Lab made it to 14 and my Pekinese-Chihuahua mix to 18) within a year and a half. Despite feeling sad, I felt old. It reflected right back to me and how I feel about myself. I still have a senior dog at home, my almost 14-year-old Yorkie, and once again I have to face my fears about what getting older really means.

I hope your little guy is doing better. He looks so sweet.❤️ ~ My little Elliot, the one who made it to 18, looked very similar. Sending ❤️
