Hi friends. Have you ever felt like you were writing four books to find the one book? That’s what I feel like I’m doing now. I know the one book is in there — there’s no doubt in my mind. I have a timeline, a thread. But whenever I sit down to work, I end up writing around and away and back again to that thread. And I can see all the distinct books that could spring forth from that writing. And I wish I could just write the one and be done.
My mother-in-law is named Joan. My husband and I have a theory that all people named Joan are a little... eccentric, so I definitely support the idea that any Joan would like a 'fucking weird' book.
True story: I found one of your books on a neighbors front porch a few months ago. Another true story: I just pre-ordered the new one from Baldwin & Co and I'm really, truly looking forward to it.
Good morning, Jami. I just want to say a couple of things besides, in addition to, thank you, for this. I'm starting my day with you because today I get to get back to my book. It's been a crowded couple of weeks, with Thanksgiving & Chanukah coming early, with traveling & hosting & the sheer glee of getting to celebrate face to face with family again. Yesterday, my latkes came out great, but my lemon poppyseed cake was dry. All the time, though, my characters, who also have families, were flourishing behind the scenes, & I can feel they have a lot to tell me. My mom's name is Betty, & we've always had a prickly relationship. My first reaction to your thoughts about writing for Joan was hell, no, don't let my mother in here, & my second is, yeah--what kind of book would Betty read or like is a very different way of thinking about my work; kind of a blast, actually. So, yeah, if you're curious about how your craft talk hits a, well, yes, I will dare to say writer here, there it is. Hope the lights burned bright; thanks again.
Pre-ordered I Came All This Way to Meet you a month ago. Can't wait. In other news, I've just responded to this newsletter with a way to help with this using my newsletter. If that's not the best way to communicate, just let me know. I really want to give back. Your books, #1000wordsofsummer, and this newsletter have helped me in my work in ways I am looking forward to sharing more specifically and widely soon.
