From my Substack this week: “The most emotional event this summer, however, was, as I was signing the papers letting go of my home in Oakland, California, I found and moved from a one bedroom apartment to a two bedroom apartment in the 16th arrondissement—the physical sign that I am taking my writing seriously and needed a room for an office. I was tired of spreading books, my journal, and my many (some unneeded) accoutrements over my dining room table and eating meals on the couch.”
Really lovely post, Jami. And I wanted to complement you on the photo of the yellow doored manse. I have been working for a very long time on a photo essay I call "Doors of Dublin" (stealing and inverting the idea Aer Lingus had for a 70s campaign). I can't quite find the throughline so it just simmers in my grey matter and a partial draft, but this picture was wonderful to see and I think maybe inspirational. So, thanks!
Hi Jami. Just came here to say I love you. We haven't met, but I'd love to one day. Thanks for all your beautiful posts and encouragement. Read your whole email at 1:40am over here in California after finishing my late night writing session. <3
A REASON TO SEE YOU AGAIN just arrived to me today, in South Korea, all the way from Books Are Magic, with your wonderful signature inside. Filled me with delight to know this book made its journey around the world, with you holding it in your hands on one end and me holding it in my hands on the other. Can't wait to dive in.
Timely post as it often is. Like the woman in your story, I just lost my writing room to construction. And even though it’s temporary and it will be bigger and better when it’s done, it really is hitting me hard to feel so homeless creatively. I’m finding my writing is stalled a bit. Good insights. Thank you. Enjoy your time in those beautiful places and the celebration of your new book!
I attended your recent seminar in Kilmore Festival. It was inspirational. I struggle to shut down my inner critic. Quite common, I'm aware, but it is stultifying.
I was soooo happy to pick up A Reason to See You Again from Books Are Magic (Smith St.) this past weekend! Two of my favorite authors moving the needle: your book/Emma Straub's shop. I had preordered and found, because you'd done a book signing the day before, that my copy had your signature! So now I have your penmanship twice: In this and in 1,000 Words. I had a long train ride home and got to crack it open. Swept away immediately by the fun, dysFUNction, and world building. It's not keeping me from my everyday commitment though to open my big beautiful mostly empty writing journal where I'm trying a first-draft long hand as I sit and watch leaves fall off the trees out my upstate NY window. So many good things!

Oh, enjoy! I took a ferry from Dublin to the Normandie. The sea was a bit rough, but the morning was magical. 🤗📷
